Mally and The Hayburners are a Norwich-born folk rock group who have forged their own hard-hitting blues-laced sound layered with heartfelt, belting vocals. The band are influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Ray Lamontagne, The Black Keys, Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, The Main Squeeze, The Nightsweats and The Cadillac Three.
2023 saw the band playing a host of shows including Red Rooster Festival, Beardy Folk and a headline slot at Folk in a Field. Studio sessions with Catch 21 Records followed, with the release of 3 track EP ‘Save Me’ in 2023. New single ‘Good for Nothing’ is released on 14th March 2025 on Catch 21, alongside a live version B Side of the track Gambling Man.
Good For Nothing is a layered landscape of sound; from the solid foundation of pounding bass and drums from Matt Argyle and Luke Roche to the soaring stadium-filling guitar riffs from Simon Evans. Singer songwriter Tom Mally’s honest vocals are packed with old school rasp and dirty direct tones – it’s a voice that’s sung 100 times and meant every word.
Tom says, “Good for Nothing was written thinking about my day job and all the struggles that come with that. Working out in all weathers, life on the shovel is not that easy and sometimes you just feel a little bit broken. You’re wondering ‘is this all I’m good for?’ But we all do the things we have to, to do the things we want to; to provide for our families.”
Haunting backing vocals from Kitty-May and a beautiful string arrangement from Helen Barnes add a cinematic feel, with a sprinkling of piano and organ from producer Gavin Bowers.
