Bay Area legends The Mother Hips will be in the Denver area on Friday, September 13 for a show at the Gothic Theatre in Englewood, CO. Fronted by songwriters Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono, the Hips have just released their eighth studio album, Behind Beyond, which marks 20 years since their debut release for Rick Rubin's American Recordings. The band's live performances are legendary and their recent performances at SF's Outside Land Festival landed them in Rolling Stone and San Francisco Chronicle and many other outlets. The Hips' eclectic sound - cosmic country, Beatle-esque pop and RnR - was dubbed "California Soul" and has brought the band a loyal, grassroots following.

Since the band's formation back in Tim and Greg's college days in Chico, CA in the early 90s, the Hips have weathered being on a major label, drug habits, line-up changes and a fickle industry to emerge as a complete cottage industry: they have their own self-sufficient imprint, Mother Hips Records, their own beer, "Hips Helles," their own "Mother Hips 'California Soul'" wines and their own rock festival, Hipnic, held annually at Big Sur.

Bluhm says that making the music meaningful -- going beyond just having a solid, well-played tune -- is the most important thing for him.

"I'm trying to make music that has a spiritual aspect where it's more than just a good song and more than just a rocking band or a commodity, an emotional experience that you might not even know is happening because it's surrounded by a loud rock band."

Along with a US fall tour, the Hips have also partnered with renowned music venue Pappy & Harriet's for the 1st Annual "Desert Dust Up" music festival taking place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 and 21st at Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown, CA. Along with the Hips, featured artists include Los Lobos, The Easy Leaves, The Donkeys, The Lonely Wild, Old Californio and many others.  There will be music on both the outside and inside stages at the venue, starting at 5 pm on September 20th and 3 pm on September 21. Tickets are on sale now here and you can check out updates at the Desert Dust-up Facebook page here.
