"We Are Dying" is an obituary for the human race as we know it. The culprit is not climate change or other man-made catastrophes but rather our own obsession with scientific progression and the development of increasingly complex technological systems and industries.
These systems and industries continue to perpetuate an existence where what made us “human” becomes obsolete. As we increasingly do more and more electronically, the platforms of social media, data collections, and algorithms navigate our interactions and identities. Artificial Intelligence and Robotics are rapidly being implemented without a consideration of where they’ll take us as a species.
Wrapped in a cocoon of ethernet cables and server wires we march blindly into the dark. It seems now more than ever, through millenia of biological evolution, we have finally progressed to the point where the technological seed we’ve been incubating is ready to leap forth from its host.
Once the switch is flipped there is no turning back. And so we stand on the precipice of a new era. One that prayer, ideology, or science cannot stop. "Speak of resurrection / But keep your lips sealed / When the code becomes human / All will be revealed."
In the music video for "We Are Dying," directed by Gray Morison we delve into a dark, yet comedic, quasi sci-fi realm of a millennial incel schlub. Through a reclining chair our protagonist thumbs through his phone and interfaces with the content of his feed. Each account represents an extreme embodiment of a social media archetype— a traveling yoga and mental health influencer, an attention-seeking motorcycle troll, a self obsessive sound cloud rapper and so on and so forth. These characters are visually exaggerated. With their distorted features and postures, they highlight the warped values and personas cultivated and idolized by our digital platforms.
Ultimately, "We Are Dying" music video serves as a dark comedic commentary on the profound impact of social media and AI on human behavior and identity. It sheds light on the dangers of losing touch with our humanity and serves as a cautionary tale against becoming mere digital creatures, enslaved by the very technology we once created.
The single/music video will be released July 26, 2023 ahead of our show with Wand for the 3rd Annual Bad Vibes Good Friends art and music festival in Barrio Logan. Check back soon!
