Paging the Blues: David Starr Plugs the ‘Hole In The Page’

Today, January 23rd, 2025, we at Grateful Web are excited to premiere “Hole In The Page,” the fiery new single from Colorado-based Blues/Americana singer-songwriter David Starr. This track is the first taste of Starr’s upcoming album, Must Be Blue, set for release on the GRAMMY®-winning label Quarto Valley Records.

Right out of the gate, “Hole In The Page” captivates with a gritty electric groove and a driving beat that perfectly showcases Starr’s soulful vocals and expert guitar work. The single comes to life thanks to an all-star cast of session players, including Greg Morrow (Don Henley, Joe Bonamassa) on drums, Jeff King (Reba McEntire, Johnny Cash) on electric guitar, Mark Prentice (Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen) on bass and keyboards, Michelle Nicolo Prentice on background vocals, Starr’s brother Joe Starr on electric guitar, and of course David Starr handling acoustic guitar and lead vocals. The track was produced by Starr alongside GRAMMY®-winning producer Mark Prentice, with David Kalmusky (Journey, Shawn Mendes) engineering and mixing.

Starr reveals that “Hole In The Page” was born out of a happy accident—a moment of “mishearing” something on a radio show. “While I’m not sure what the announcer said, it sounded to me like he said ‘hole in the page,’” Starr recalls. “The story he was reporting on had nothing to do with such a phrase, but I took the line and ran with it. That's how the magic of songwriting sometimes happens.”

That serendipity translated into a powerhouse lead single that Starr calls “the perfect introduction to what’s to come” on his new record. “I love how this recorded version has some real body to it,” he shares. “Jeff King’s guitar work sets the tone, and the band just rocked it from there. I couldn’t be more pleased with the way the song came together.”

Alongside this new single, Starr has reason to celebrate: he was recently inducted into the founding class of the Northwest Arkansas Musicians Hall Of Fame, where he performed at the ceremonies last month. Looking ahead, Starr will hit the road for shows in Denver at Swallow Hill’s Tuft Theatre on March 8 and at his hometown venue, the Grand Mesa Arts & Events Center in Cedaredge, CO, on March 21.

This new music follows Starr’s decades-long career touring internationally, collaborating and sharing stages with icons like John Oates, Steve Cropper, Jim Lauderdale, and Wild Ponies, as well as opening for America, Karla Bonoff, and Jim Messina, among others. Having grown up playing electric guitar in Southern Arkansas clubs, and spending significant time exploring the Americana and Folk scenes in Nashville, Starr’s sound is a seamless fusion he calls “Bluesicana”—and “Hole In The Page” is a prime example.
