Portland, Maine-based indie folk artist Matt Cascella, performing under the moniker Schmoon—his childhood nickname—is set to release his new album Pretty Darn Pretty on December 13, 2024. Brimming with playful whimsy and heartfelt nostalgia, the album explores the innocence of growing up and the poignant reflections of adulthood. Featuring richly textured arrangements and captivating storytelling, Pretty Darn Pretty encapsulates the bittersweet joys of time-worn memories, present anxieties, and the mysteries of what lies ahead.

Pretty Darn Pretty is an album of characters—some flawed, some redeeming—with Cascella’s authentic voice shining through every track. The album kicks off with the observational folk tune “Sadly County Fair,” a wry commentary on Americana, and delves into songs like the whimsical “Birthday Pancakes,” the Americana rocker “Bowlegged Rider,” and the poignant title track, which reflects on the allure of nostalgia while encouraging forward momentum.

A Multifaceted Talent
Before moving to Portland during the pandemic, Cascella made his mark in New York City’s indie scene with his band Brooms and as a solo artist under the name Owlbiter. Outside of music, he recently debuted his feature film Hangdog, now streaming, which stars Desmin Borges (You’re the Worst, Only Murders in the Building) and features a soundtrack by Walter Martin of The Walkmen. Cascella’s work as an editor and director spans esteemed clients such as HBO, National Geographic, Vice, CNN, and Maysles Films.

The Single: “Birthday Pancakes”
Alongside the album, Schmoon is releasing the single “Birthday Pancakes,” a quirky track about ruining acts of kindness by keeping score, only to weaponize them during arguments. Featuring playful instrumentation with glockenspiel, banjo, and accordion, the song showcases Schmoon’s signature blend of humor and vulnerability.

Praise for Schmoon
Schmoon has garnered acclaim from outlets including Brooklyn Vegan, Glide Magazine, Americana UK, and more. His music resonates with fans of artists like Christian Lee Hutson, M. Ward, Big Thief, and Randy Newman. Previous releases have been celebrated for their introspection, inventive instrumentation, and wry lyrical wit.
