The Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College is proud to present its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Celebration on Sunday, January 19. This year’s event, held in partnership with the Queens Borough President’s Office, will honor Dr. King’s enduring legacy and the special connection he shared with Queens College, where he delivered a powerful address in Colden Auditorium in 1965.

The celebration will commence at 3 PM with a recognition ceremony and keynote address by this year’s honoree, Arva Rice, President and CEO of the New York Urban League. Rice will reflect on Dr. King’s principles of social justice, education, and community empowerment—values that the New York Urban League continues to advance in today’s world. Her remarks will be followed by a special presentation honoring Dr. King’s historic relationship to the Queens community.

At 4 PM, the festivities continue with a performance by the legendary Branford Marsalis Quartet. Led by NEA Jazz Master and three-time Grammy Award-winner Branford Marsalis, the quartet’s sound and synergy represent the pinnacle of modern jazz artistry. Their performance will draw from a kaleidoscopic repertoire of original compositions, jazz standards, and beloved popular tunes. Recognized by All About Jazz as “Serious in both concept and execution,” the Branford Marsalis Quartet’s musical mastery and intuitive interplay promise an unforgettable concert experience.

For over a decade, Kupferberg Center for the Arts and Queens College have commemorated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by bringing together distinguished guest speakers, community leaders, and world-class artists to celebrate Dr. King’s monumental contributions to civil rights and social justice. This year’s event continues the tradition of uplifting Dr. King’s message of equality, peace, and hope for all.
