The fourth CD from West Coast singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Scott Cooper, “Four Four” showcases Cooper’s penchant for smart lyrics and catchy hooks with the approach of a jam band. Cooper’s first CD reached #5 on the Relix jam band radio charts and this EP similarly features his unique mix of psychedelia, New Orleans R&B, classic country and good ole rock n roll. A veteran of the West Coast music scene, Cooper has performed with Donna Godchaux (Grateful Dead), Ben Ellman (Galactic), Bill Laymon (David Nelson Band), Jay Lane (RatDog/Further) and many others. Well-known throughout California for his work with the Grateful Dead tribute band the China Cats, where he plays the Bob Weir role, Cooper also travels with his own band Scott Cooper & The Barrelmakers. The backing band on three of these four songs, the Barrelmakers include founding Dark Star Orchestra drummer Mark Corsolini and slide guitar ace Scott Walker (better known as the guitar builder for Barry Sless, Neal Casal, Steve Kimock and many others). The CD also includes cameos from percussionist Warren Jones (California Honeydrops) and Annie Staninec (Rod Stewart, Peter Rowan). All songs are written by Cooper.
“Warren Zevon” - An ode to Warren Zevon written in the style of Warren Zevon … well, maybe some Dead and Radiators influence in there too.
“Today’s the Day I Started Drinking Again” - Written Nov 9, 2016 when I learned of Trump’s victory.
“Last Transmission” - Spacey, psychedelic and funky tune about a guy who’s en route to Mars and send his last transmission to earth, bidding farewell to his family.
“Every Night” - Could have been an Allen Toussaint tune covered by Little Feat … but isn’t.
“Recommended if you like long jams that romp through rock, roots and blues."
