DEVO, the trailblazing band that first introduced the world to their unique concept of “de-evolution,” is continuing their creative renaissance with an exciting slate of new projects and live performances. Following a five-year hiatus, the group demonstrated their enduring impact by releasing Hardcore Devo Volumes 1 and 2—70s-era compilations that trace DEVO’s early electronic rock experiments and cemented their reputation as pioneering innovators. Two subsequent anthologies, Pioneers Who Got Scalped and Recombo DNA, further showcased the band’s knack for pushing sonic boundaries.
During this hiatus, Mark Mothersbaugh built a thriving career in film and television composition, crafting memorable theme music for programs like MTV’s Liquid Television, Rugrats, and Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. His production company, Mutato Muzika, flourished with fellow bandmates Robert Mothersbaugh and Robert Casale. Meanwhile, Gerald Casale turned his talents toward directing, working on DEVO’s own music videos as well as notable projects for bands like Rush, Foo Fighters, and Soundgarden.
DEVO’s legend only grew in the 1990s as their influential catalog was embraced by artists such as Nirvana and Soundgarden, who covered classic DEVO tracks. The band’s appearances at Lollapalooza in 1996 and 1997 introduced their minimalist electro-pop to new fans, leading to select international tours and innovative ventures such as the Adventures of the Smart Patrol CD-ROM game and DEVO 2.0, a project for Disney’s Hollywood Records featuring a teen band and CG animation.
By 2006, a new spark ignited when Gerald Casale teamed with Mark Mothersbaugh to compose “Watch Us Work It,” featured in a major national advertising campaign. The track’s overwhelming reception spurred the creation of new songs—over 35 by 2009—and eventually resulted in the acclaimed Something for Everybody album on Warner Bros. Records. Embracing modern marketing tactics like crowd-sourced opinion and social media while maintaining their signature satirical edge, DEVO proved that their concept of de-evolution still resonates.
Today, the band continues to expand its creative universe with an upcoming musical set in their alternate reality of Spudland—populated by characters like Booji Boy, Dr. Byrthfood, and Rod Rooter—and is nearing completion of a darkly comic feature film exploring DEVO’s earliest origins. With an ongoing mission to enlighten a new generation about the realities of de-evolution, DEVO invites fans to celebrate 50 years of groundbreaking music and provocative performance.
