Chris Stapleton was the top winner at last night’s 58th Annual CMA Awards, taking home three honors: Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year (“White Horse”), and Single of the Year (“White Horse”). With these accolades, Stapleton now holds 19 CMA Awards, tying the record for most wins ever with Brooks & Dunn. He also extended his own record for most Male Vocalist of the Year wins, now totaling eight. Stapleton’s wife and collaborator, Morgane Stapleton, celebrated her first CMA Award last night as a producer for Single of the Year.
Stapleton performed three times during the live broadcast: “What Am I Gonna Do,” “California Sober” with Post Malone, and “Honky Tonk Hall of Fame” with George Strait.
These achievements cap another triumphant year for Stapleton, who released his album Higher last fall via Mercury Nashville. Produced by Dave Cobb, Morgane Stapleton, and Chris Stapleton, the record landed on numerous “Best of” lists, including Billboard, Esquire, Vulture, and Rolling Stone. Rolling Stone praised it as “dazzling…the best evidence yet for the way one man’s voice has become synonymous with the very idea of a musical genre.” GQ declared, “In an age rife with division, he’s maybe the only thing Americans all agree on…one of the most reliable hitmakers in music.” Meanwhile, NPR Music noted, “Higher puts him where he always really was—in that classic kind of rock and soul, Tom Petty, Eagles, going beyond the confines of the genre.”
One of the country’s most respected and beloved musicians, Stapleton also emerged as the top winner at the 59th Annual ACM Awards this past spring, with four wins, and claimed two awards at the 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Recently, Stapleton has collaborated with Post Malone (“California Sober”), Dua Lipa (“Think I’m In Love With You (Live from the 59th ACM Awards)”), Slash (“Oh Well”), and George Strait (“Honky Tonk Hall of Fame”). He also recorded Tom Petty’s “I Should Have Known It” for a tribute album, and returned to Saturday Night Live for the third time as a musical guest.
Earlier this year, Stapleton performed the National Anthem at Super Bowl LVII. Over the years, he has worked with Adele, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Justin Timberlake, P!nk, Sheryl Crow, and Santana, among many others.
Known for his electric live performances, the 10-time GRAMMY, 19-time CMA, and 19-time ACM Award-winner will continue his All-American Road Show tour into next year. The tour includes sold-out dates in New Zealand and Australia. Full tour details are available at www.chrisstapleton.com/tour.
Higher follows 2020’s acclaimed Starting Over, which won three GRAMMY Awards and received Album of the Year honors at both the CMA and ACM Awards. Described as “a sure-footed masterpiece” by the Associated Press, the album appeared on numerous “Best of 2020” lists, including NPR Music, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. The New York Times proclaimed, “Chris Stapleton’s roar isn’t designed to scare you off. It’s regal, an announcement of an alpha figure asserting his primacy…on this, his fourth album, the thrill is back.”
Before Starting Over, Stapleton released two Platinum-certified albums in 2017 (From A Room: Volume 1 and From A Room: Volume 2) as well as his 5x Platinum breakthrough debut, Traveller, in 2015.
In addition to their musical careers, the Stapletons founded the Outlaw State of Kind charitable fund, which supports causes close to their hearts. Stapleton also unveiled Traveller Whiskey, a first-of-its-kind collaboration with Buffalo Trace Distillery’s Master Distiller, Harlen Wheatley.
