The number of stages that 14-time Grammy winner Dan Tyminski has stepped foot on throughout his storied career is difficult to fathom. From his numerous years as a guitarist and vocalist with Alison Krauss & Union Station to his chart-topping solo endeavors, and every sit-in in between, Tyminski has honed his live performance craft all of the way down to exactly how to pen a setlist to make the most of every show. The leadoff track from his upcoming live concert album, Dan Tyminski: Live From The Ryman, is a perfect example of how the set starts to come together.
“We started a show with a song that I did with Alison Krauss & Union Station a while ago, ‘This Sad Song,’” remembers Tyminski of his performance captured on stage at the Mother Church of Country Music. “I get a nervous energy when we start a show. ‘This Sad Song’ has a type of energy and power that, whether I’m nervous or not, I can sing it hard. I can sing it loud. So, for me, it’s the perfect opening song.” A fiery banjo and fiddle intro sets the stage for the burning number from 2004’s Lonely Runs Both Ways, giving both the in-person audience and folks consuming the recorded show a clear picture of what is to come: a legend in the Bluegrass world performing career-spanning crowd-favorites, backed by some of the brightest young stars in the game.

More About Dan Tyminski: Live From The Ryman: "The musicians in this band grew up listening to my music, so they know my stuff much better than I do!" Tyminski says. "If you listen to how they play and how well they listen to each other, you'll notice there's a conversation going back and forth at all times."
That conversation springs to life during instrumental numbers like "Cumberland Gap," where the audience roars its approval after each solo. It continues with live renditions of "Ode to Jimmy" (a tribute to Tyminski's childhood hero, Jimmy Martin), "Silence in the Brandy" (which examines the lingering effects of PTSD on soldiers returning home from war), and "GOAT" — all of which appeared on God Fearing Heathen, which debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart in 2023—and breathes new life into older material like the aforementioned "This Sad Song," which Tyminski first performed on Alison Krauss & Union Station's Grammy-winning Lonely Runs Both Ways. On "Whiskey Drinking Man," Tyminski sings about hard liquor with a commanding voice that reaches all the way to the rearmost rows of the Ryman, then cedes the spotlight to mandolinist Harry Clark, fiddler Maddie Denton, Dobro player Gaven Largent, banjoist Jason Davis, and upright bassist Grace Davis. There's also a standout performance of "I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow," the career-changing song that won a Grammy Award in 2002 and has since served as a bridge for multiple generations of music fans, helping them discover their own love of bluegrass and traditional folk music.
