With A Tip Toe High Wire, her first new album in five years, songwriter, singer, and award-winning mandolinist Sierra Hull has perfected the daring act of stepping into a new, progressive sonic territory while never straying too far from the bluegrass and Americana roots she’s cultivated in her two-decade-plus career. While joined on the album by world-class friends like Béla Fleck, Tim O’Brien, and Aoife O’Donovan, Hull self-produced A Tip Toe High Wire with her highly skilled touring band in the center ring—something she was able to make the call on as this is also her first album to be released entirely independently. “In some ways, it feels like stepping out into a different territory,” Hull says. “And leaning into that at this chapter of my career—the freedom of being able to be out on my own, to create with no walls for what feels like the first time—has helped me grow.”
The result is a fine-tuned balancing act between Hull’s ethos and ambitions when it comes to entering the studio and jumping onto the stage. It’s a genuine sentiment of creative inspiration and the intimate nature of a performer offering up the most vulnerable corners of their being. “There’s nothing like putting on a record that inspires me or going to a live show that blows my mind,” Hull says. “It makes me want to go home and write songs or get on a stage and try to be better at giving that same kind of emotion in my own way to an audience.”
Fans can stream or purchase A Tip Toe High Wire—named in honor of Hull’s grandmother, as heard in the album track, “Spitfire”—today at this link. Today, Hull released the video for “Muddy Water,” a song she co-wrote with Andrew Petroff and Caroline Spence about, in her words, “not feeling like you have to pretend to be something you aren’t.” Joined by Ronnie Bowman and Lindsay Lou on beautifully stacked harmonies, Hull’s delivery on the song’s refrain is both heartwrenching and heartwarming: “I wish that you would show me who you are when you let it all go. I will never leave you standing alone in muddy water.”
In addition to her own headline shows this year, Hull will be joining the Outlaw Music Festival Tour for its first 2025 leg, May 13-24. Hull and her band will share the stage with Willie Nelson & Family, Bob Dylan, and Billy Strings for all eight West Coast shows, including stops at the Hollywood Bowl and The Gorge Amphitheatre. Tickets are available now at this link. A full list of Hull’s tour dates can be found below or at sierrahull.com.
