Della Mae, recently named a “New Artist You Need to Know” and one of the “50 Best Things at SXSW 2015” by Rolling Stone, have released their new, self-titled album.
The Boston Globe’s James Reed writes, “As impressive as it was — indeed, it earned the group a Grammy nomination for best bluegrass album — it turns out that Della Mae’s 2013 sophomore release was something of a warm-up. This World Oft Can Be, which marked the Boston-bred string band’s debut for Rounder Records, only hinted at the masterful performances on its new eponymous follow-up. Della Mae is smart and assured, a continuation of the band’s penchant for blurring the lines between bluegrass, folk, soul, and old-time traditions..”
Nate Chinen of the New York Times notes, “If there’s any real convergence between New England bluegrass, Nashville Americana and the Anglo thump of indie-folk, Della Mae stands planted at the crossroads.” He continues, “Ms. Woodsmith is as compelling on a delicate ballad like ‘For the Sake of My Heart’ as on a saucy kiss-off like ‘Shambles.’ Her band mates harmonize winningly behind her, and two of them – the mandolinist Jenni Lyn Gardner and the banjoist, guitarist and songwriter Courtney Hartman – take self-assure turns in the vocal lead.”
Hal Horowitz of American Songwriter proclaims, “Since the group mixes country, folk and subtle rock leanings with a rural backwoods sound, the “hardly strictly bluegrass” tag perfectly describes their more eclectic approach.” He also praises their “exquisite melodies,” and “introspective lyrics.”
All Music’s Thom Jurek writes, “On this album, Della Mae expand their roots-and-groove quotient, and extend the margins in their writing without sacrificing either the virtuosity and sparkle in their performance or the root persona in their sound.”
Fred Smith of Country Standard Time declares, “The time has come to drop the label ‘female bluegrass band’ as applied to Della Mae. With their second, self-titled, Rounder Records release, Della Mae is simply one of the most accomplished bluegrass acts on the circuit.”
The band recently shot two videos for "Boston Town:" The first is a performance clip that was filmed in Austin, TX, which premiered on Pop Sugar, and the other was filmed -- appropriately -- in Boston, MA. The latter video made its debut with Elmore magazine.
