Chicago based Dr. Wippit just released his latest release: An Anthology of Sorts in 2012. An Anthology of Sorts” is one release that certainly doesn’t disappoint. This is one artist that brings to the table effective songwriting via a highly passionate musical delivery. This meshed with a one in a million Alternative Urban Rock sound and songwriting make for an effective combination. Dr. Wippit even touches on Jam Band, and Melodic Indie Pop-Rock. All songs are wonderfully simple but masterful in their overall arrangements. Music reminded me of a cross between Sublime, Jason Mraz and even Jack Johnson. On the other side of the sonic spectrum I can hear: The Long Beach Dub All-Stars, Fishbone and 311. This CD is quite entertaining and uplifting overall with an amazing vocal front of Dr. Wippit himself. Wippit is one of those one man circus artists and is quite appealing and marketable (vocals and visuals). If he just so happened to write all these songs well he could be bigger than any of us realize at the moment. But his biggest downfalls are 2 items. 1: his rhythm section is shall we say somewhat lacking. 2: the overall quality of the CD is all over the place and doesn’t sound pro-caliber at all. Still there all songs that are amazing via well-crafted effects and top tiered musicianship. Dr. Wippit is no-doubt a good guitarist and there are some incredible moments on this CD. Many songs simply personify the Human Experience which gives Dr. Wippit an amazing feel in his attempt to connect with a Urban cult fanbase around Chicago.I give him an “A” for effort but a C- for execution. Dr. Wippit has proven himself with this release – but he has a way to go to reach his full potential. No doubt his best music is yet to come. He’s still an up and coming talent around Chicago and he is clearly a capable writer, singer and musician. I must admit “An Anthology of Sorts” sucked me in like a powerful drug and refused to let go long after the EP was over. This usually indicates he is something special about the artist or band in question. Thus deserving praise, recognition and musical fame at the international level.
