Evergreen is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and cello teacher who came up in the Austin classical scene and has since taken her musical lifestyle to international grounds. She has performed on stage with musicians such as Sarah Chang, Father John Misty, Chris Brubeck, and The Eagles. Evergreen utilizes music to creatively and emotionally empower people of all ages and from all walks of life by maintaining an active teaching studio as well as participating in musical and workshop collaborations with her colleagues in Austin and abroad. She utilizes the emotional training she receives from therapeutic work and yoga teacher training in her music and classes. Aside from making music, Evergreen enjoys gardening, going on picnics, painting, biking, reading, doing yoga, traveling, finding waterfalls to swim in, and watching the stars; and she is always excited to learn something new.
Meteors is the true story of Evergreen’s 21st birthday party, written by her friend and collaborator Lizzie Karr. December 13, 2017 was a remarkably cold day, and it had snowed the evening before—a rare occurrence in Austin, Texas. Nevertheless, she got up early, went to the local market right when it opened, bought herself a bottle of champagne, and carried it around in her picnic basket on a hike by the river all day. She went swimming in her underwear in the freezing water and communed quietly with the wild herons who live near the water. The plan for the evening was to observe the night sky from the tallest point in town, as the brightest meteor shower of the year, the Geminid shower, was at its peak. It was so cold that many people bailed, trying to convince her to go to warmer locations where they might be served a hot drink - but Evergreen was not attracted to the loud and drunk holiday crowds. Instead, she and a handful of dedicated friends sat at the top of the hill overlooking the lake, wrapped themselves up in a comforter that a friend had stuffed in the back of his truck, passed around the bottle of champagne, a thermos of hot cocoa, and a guitar, and had absolutely the best, most magical time experiencing old and new friendships. This transformative moment led to many more—a few days later, Lizzie emailed her a draft of the song, she sent back a picture of herself crying, and the band that followed became Evergreen’s first non-classical musical endeavor. Since then, she has become an active non-classical cellist and a strong advocate for expanding the repertoire and genre scope of music education.
“Creating this song was such a milestone for me,” Evergreen says of her first single. “Music has the potential to be expressive in such limitless ways, and making this song helped me explore and expand. It goes beyond finding my own voice, because it’s about being confident out of boxes—finding boxes and leaving them behind to just be comfortable in the imperfect beauty of my humanity and the humanity of my friends.”
Meteors was recorded with a group of Evergreen’s closest friends at Scary American Studios in Austin, Texas, and was released on all platforms on New Year’s Eve, 2022. A full LP will be released in spring 2023.
