Did John Lennon ever write a song for Guster? Not likely, but if you close your eyes and listen to the new song “Temporary Life” by four member Connecticut rock band Foxtrotter, you might be able to imagine what that would sound like.

The song was released this past Thursday and comes off the band’s forthcoming album, Night Sky, which is set to be released on June 18. If this first track is any indicator, then the new record will be a beautifully optimistic, musically feel-good collection of music from the Foxtrotter.

“Temporary Life,” with its intricately blended yet brightly pop-tinged composition, feels like just the kind of soundtrack the current times are calling for. Granted, its title and its first minute of existential questions might suggest otherwise but come chorus time the song brims with melodious and lyrical benignity. Cool, multi-horn parts and colorful lines on piano and acoustic and electric guitar punctuate a bouncy groove of bass, synth, and drums, and at the crest of it all lead singer and song composer Dave Lefkin sings “Life is for making people smile, what you need is your ideas.”

The song certainly makes us feel pretty groovy, but it also excites as to what else might be coming ahead from Foxtrotter. In the past few years, the band has cut their teeth on the vibrant Connecticut music scene and are known to push the envelope on stage as much as many of the other jamband and funk favorites in the northeast area. Combined with the upbeat radiance found in “Temporary Life,” the group’s well-honed instrumental abilities should make Night Sky a must-hear when it releases.

The band recently performed an outdoor concert at Connecticut locally popular music venue James Madison House, and best bets are that there is more to come this season, especially as live music begins to slowly ease back into its former mode.
