Trumpeter, composer and multi-instrumentalist Darren Barrett has released a new album Live and Direct: Dee’s Theme. Released on all streaming services on December 10th, 2021 on his dB Studios label. This eight-track collection seven written by Barrett and one by Walden are a collection of some previous recorded tracks from his First One Up studio recording project along with a few new ones. This recording is one of 16 unreleased recordings that dB Studios has in what they call the dB Vaults and will be releasing recordings from the Vaults moving forward. Live and Direct: Dee’s Theme: features long time collaborator Myron Walden, who plays brilliantly throughout the set.
The recording also features a fabulous young rhythm section consisting of Takeshi Ohbayashi (Piano), Alexander Toth (bass) and Anthony Toth (drums) who bring the fire and passion from start to end.
On his 13th release as a leader, Darren Barrett and dB Studios continues to release quality music. Though this project being acoustic in nature, dB and the label also pushes the envelope by incorporating acoustic instruments with electronic instruments and creative production techniques. An example of this can be heard on their April 2021 release Darren Barrett - Town Hall Meeting: 2020. Their forward thinking and explorations positions them as one of the foremost innovators in the contemporary jazz realm.
