A Collaboration Years in the Making
Joe Lovano and Julian Lage’s artistic connection dates back to 1999, when the then 11-year-old guitar prodigy first met the jazz legend at a performance at Yoshi’s in Oakland. Over the years, their mutual admiration has grown through chance performances and a shared respect for each other’s artistry. “Julian is a natural, beautiful, expressive musician with maturity beyond his years,” Lovano reflects. “Collaborating with him in the Paramount Quartet is a dream come true.”
A Band Steeped in Legacy and Innovation
The Paramount Quartet brings together four distinct voices in jazz, blending decades of experience with boundless creativity. Asante Santi Debriano, a longtime collaborator of Lovano’s from their days in the Archie Shepp Quartet, anchors the band on bass. On drums, Will Calhoun, known for his groundbreaking work with Living Colour, brings an electrifying edge honed during a recent fundraiser set with Lovano and Debriano for Puerto Rican hurricane relief.
The band debuted at the Village Vanguard in February 2024, earning rave reviews for their explosive synergy and boundary-pushing artistry. Now, this innovative ensemble brings its inspired sound to Boulder for an unforgettable evening.
