Fast rising Minneapolis band Nooky Jones is back with a new EP, Like Candy, slated for release on Friday, September 27, 2019. Like Candy represents the evolution in songwriting, arranging, recording, and producing in the two years since the release of Nooky Jones’ self-titled debut album. The band wanted to produce a collection of songs that captures the high octane atmosphere of the Nooky Jones live show experience, a sound that has been described by NPR’s Heavy Rotation as “equal parts Stevie Wonder, D’Angelo and Prince…guaranteed to move both heart and booty.” The band will celebrate the release of their EP at the legendary Paisley Park on September 28th, making it the first live ticketed event at the historic grounds, since Prince’s passing in 2016.
Nooky Jones has been captivating audiences with their unique blend of soul, jazz, and undertones of hip hop throughout the twin cities and now breaking onto a national level with critical support from NPR Music, Daytrotter, and Paste supporting their 2017 debut album. The band’s touring experience in front of hometown sold out shows and national festivals have defined a bolder and brighter sound for Nooky Jones that’s represented on the original five tracks throughout the EP. Each track has its own unique flavor; “Gimme Some More” (tempting), “Pardon Me” (dark), “Like Candy” (sweet), “Everything You Do” (rich), and “After Two” (crispy).
The first single from the EP titled “Gimme Some More,” pays homage to the classic R&B and hip-hop singles of the 90s, “Gimme Some More” was pressed as a limited edition 12” vinyl record, complete with instrumental and a cappella mixes to cater to DJs. An irresistibly bouncy, old school funk-inspired track that showcased a different side of the band. The band’s lyric-writing team of Cameron Kinghorn (vocals) and Reid Kennedy (drums), reveal that this move was a conscious—yet completely natural—aesthetic shift, informed by months of entertaining audiences across the region with their renowned live performances. The title track and second single “Like Candy” weaves clever lyrical metaphor with a laid back Motown sound highlighted by lush string writing. Reid adds, “The song has playful and catchy songwriting and a throwback soul sound. One listen and you’ll be hooked.” The third single “After Two” is a fresh rearrangement of “After One” from Nooky Jones’ debut album. Listeners might recognize the lyrics, but the updated melodies, harmonies, riffs, grooves and horn writing represent the band’s funkiest output to date. It features Minneapolis native Cory Wong of Vulfpeck and The Fearless Flyers.
Nooky Jones will be celebrating the release of their EP on Saturday, September 28th at an exclusive event and performance in Paisley Park’s iconic Sound Stage in Chanhassen, MN sponsored by 89.3, The Current.
