Oliver Wood has released "Yo I Surrender," the second single from his new album, Fat Cat Silhouette, due June 14 on Honey Jar Records / Indirecto Records. An irresistible cut of syncopated roots music minimalism, the track features special guest Steve Berlin of Los Lobos on baritone saxophone. The song's accompanying lyric video was premiered today via Relix HERE.
"This was a fun collaboration between myself, Jano Rix, Ted Pecchio and Steve Berlin. Both writing and recording the song was a very childlike process,” explains Oliver Wood. "The music came together live in the studio with all of us in a circle creating a playful and loose vibe. Quirky lyrics quickly followed. It was so fun to play with amazing musicians who listen to each other and allow you to just trust and surrender."
Fat Cat Silhouette was produced by Oliver Wood and his Wood Brothers’ bandmate Jano Rix. The nine-song collection features several collaborations, including songs co-written with Seth Walker, Sean McConnell and Ric Robertson and guest performances by acclaimed singer/songwriter Katie Pruitt, Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin and Marshall Tucker Band’s Marcus James Henderson.
Throughout Fat Cat Silhouette, longtime fans will recognize the earnest, elastic voice that has always anchored The Wood Brothers' mix of forward-looking folk and southern country-funk, but the similarities often end there. Instead, Wood abandons convention, breaks rules, and positions himself as a roots-music innovator.
"Making this album was a process of being immediate, making quick decisions, and trusting that the universe and my years of experience would handle the rest,” explains Wood. "I wanted to get outside my box and embrace the uncertainty of what's out there. I wanted weird guitar tones. I wanted more percussion and less drums. Once we began experimenting and doing whatever inspired us, the pressure melted away and I felt liberated."
That might as well be Fat Cat Silhouette’s mission statement. This is an album that finds the art in the unexpected, and Oliver Wood—whose songwriting and vocal chops remain as sharp as ever—at his most adventurous.
