Australian singer-songwriter and guitarist Peter Freebairn is excited to announce the release of his debut solo album, ‘Silhouettes & Cigarettes’, available globally on Friday, May 17, 2024. This album marks Freebairn's first comprehensive project since his self-titled solo EP in 2019.
The lead single, ‘I Got Lucky (I Got You)’, showcases Freebairn's knack for crafting infectious, radio-friendly power-pop reminiscent of Matthew Sweet and Mike Viola. A distinctive guitar motif and an engaging theremin line give the track a unique edge. Freebairn describes the song as "a cool road track," inspired by a surfing trip along Victoria's Surf Coast. Despite being the album's final track, its placement reflects careful consideration, aiming to enhance the listening experience.
Freebairn’s musical influences are deeply embedded in the album, with nods to iconic bands and artists like The Beatles, Matthew Sweet, and World Party. His admiration for the Beatles' 'Revolver' album is particularly evident in his attention to the quality of sound, especially the drums and bass.
Recorded and produced in his home studio, Valley Road Studios, Freebairn emphasizes the organic approach to the album's creation, from meticulously miking real valve guitar amps to playing the majority of the instruments himself. However, Paul Boyle on drums and Jo George on piano, keyboards, and harmony vocals also contributed significantly, adding depth to the soundscape.
The album features a variety of tracks that span genres from retro power-pop to soulful ballads. Songs like 'Home Town', 'World You Choose', and 'Crazy Love' complement the Beatlesque 'You And I' and 'Silhouette'. ‘Say Goodbye (Reprise)’, another highlight, delves into the poignant theme of parting with loved ones.
Peter Freebairn is set to bring 'Silhouettes & Cigarettes' to life during a live performance at Wesley Anne High Street Northcote in Melbourne, Australia, on Saturday, May 18, 2024. Tickets are available at Oztix.
The album is released under the Australian independent label Pop Preservation Society. For more information, please visit Peter Freebairn’s official website and follow him on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Spotify.
