Get ready for an unforgettable night of roots reggae as the legendary Black Uhuru takes the stage at the Fox Theatre on Sunday, March 9, 2025. Doors open at 7:00 pm, and the show kicks off at 8:00 pm. Tickets go on sale at 10 AM on Friday, October 18 and can be purchased here.
With a legacy spanning over 50 years, Black Uhuru remains one of Jamaica's most prolific and celebrated reggae bands. As pioneers of the genre, they've achieved numerous milestones, including winning the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording. Their enduring success, second only to Bob Marley in reggae record sales, and their influence on artists worldwide have solidified their status as true ambassadors of reggae music.
A Journey Through Reggae History
Originating in Kingston's "Waterhouse" district in the late '60s, Black Uhuru was founded by Derrick "Duckie" Simpson, along with Don Carlos and Garth Dennis. Over the years, the group evolved, collaborating with iconic musicians like Sly & Robbie to develop their signature sound—characterized by heavy drum and bass rhythms, sharp keyboard accents, and mesmerizing guitar riffs.
Their critically acclaimed albums, such as Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, Sinsemilla, and Chill Out, have left an indelible mark on the music industry. Rolling Stone magazine ranked their album Red at #23 on its list of 100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s. The band's groundbreaking work earned them the inaugural Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording in 1984 for the album Anthem.
Continuing the Legacy
In recent years, Black Uhuru has continued to produce new music and captivate audiences worldwide. Their 2018 album As The World Turns was nominated for Best Reggae Album at the 61st Grammy Awards. The band followed up with New Day in 2022, featuring collaborations with Dylan's Dharma band and produced by King Hopeton.
Their live performances are a testament to their enduring talent and influence, blending classic hits with new material that resonates with fans old and new.
