Climate Control Projects announces the addition of The War On Drugs to The Big Climate Thing. The band will headline the climate action concert’s Saturday, September 17th lineup rounding out a diverse 3-day bill of climate-concerned music makers - a list that includes Khruangbin, The Roots, The Flaming Lips, Gary Clark Jr., HAIM, Sheryl Crow, Guster, Antibalas, Courtney Barnett, Sunflower Bean, and The Weather Station, among others. The War On Drugs steadily emerged as one of this century’s great rock and roll synthesists, removing the gaps between the underground and the mainstream. Led by Adam Granduciel, The New Yorker called The War On Drugs “the best American ‘rock’ band of this decade” in support of their album, A Deeper Understanding, for which they won the 2018 Grammy for Best Rock Album.
Last fall, The War On Drugs released their fifth studio album, I Don’t Live Here Anymore. "[I Don't Live Here Anymore] is easily the band’s clearest, most vibrant, and upbeat. You’ll want to play it loud and see it live.” (GQ). It landed on numerous 2021 best albums of the year lists, including Pitchfork, Billboard, Entertainment Weekly, Stereogum, and SPIN, and garnered a second BRIT Award nomination. The band headlined Madison Square Garden in support of its release.
The Big Climate Thing is a call to action on climate change featuring an eclectic, multi-generational lineup of artists and programming, immersive on-site activations, and curated content. Its goal is to raise awareness, accountability, action, and inspire real-time solutions surrounding the global climate crisis by connecting to concertgoers through the transformative power of music. The event’s first announcement on June 27th inspired some healthy uptake in press with coverage in ROLLING STONE, PITCHFORK, POLLSTAR, VARIETY, STEREOGUM, NME, SPIN, NYLON, BROOKLYN VEGAN, BILLBOARD, RELIX, and many others.
Complementing the above, The Big Climate Thing will also host the premiere of a session series videotaped and recorded at Abbey Road Studios and featuring Julian Lennon, whose session marked his very first trip to the legendary shop; FINNEAS, coming in after a spate of O2 concerts with his sister, Billie Eilish; Alex Turner of Hot Chip performing a latter-day Beach Boys deep dive and UK singer/songwriter, Nick Mulvey, fresh off a sold-out London club show and play at Glastonbury.
In addition to the concert, a digital platform, BigUp, will launch later this year. Not just another event-focused app, BigUp provides a virtual counterpart to The Big Climate Thing, creating a place where artists and audiences, creators, and consumers can converge in a safe, non-judgmental community to take action on climate change.
Additionally, Climate Control Projects has undertaken the mission to establish The Big Climate Lab, a first-of-its-kind innovation studio focused on leveraging extensive research and development to catalyze sector change within the music industry. The Big Climate Lab will collaborate with veterans from the touring and festival industry, research scientists, and sustainability experts from other disciplines to determine a set of transformative goals for the decarbonization of live music.
EarthPercent, an NGO organization founded in the UK by Brian Eno to raise money within the music industry to support climate action, is the official charity partner of The Big Climate Thing and Climate Control Projects. The two entities are committed to working together to create holistic, comprehensive, and impactful opportunities for members of the music industry to engage in meaningful climate action.
