Born and raised in New York City, The brash quartet hailing from Queens that ignited the punk-rock movement in 1976. Their short, combustible songs drew from the worlds of comic books, horror films, girl groups and garage rock. The Del McCoury Band’s tribute to Bill Monroe, Old Memories: The Songs of Bill Monroe, will be released on CD just in time for the Grammy Awards.  The album was previously released digitally and on vinyl in September 2011 and received a Grammy nomination for “Best Bluegrass Album” in December.

Rock ’n’ roll may date back to Jackie Brenston’s “Rocket 88” in 1951 and perhaps further to blues/swing hybrids of the 1940s. But many would contend that Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti,” recorded at Cosimo Matassa’s studio in new Orleans in September 1955, was the first great rock ’n’ roll record.
