"It’s strange for me sometimes because I was born in 1992... but I really like the old music." That’s a quote from Billy Strings at his Greek Theatre performance Saturday night. And that’s Billy Strings through and through. But he must also like the “new music” – or perhaps we could call it the “slightly less-old” music of the psychedelic jam world.
Billy Strings brought a unique and electrifying energy to the Windy City, transforming the Allstate Arena into a bluegrass haven on Friday, May 24, 2024. From the moment the doors opened, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation. Chicago’s own bluegrass legends, the Henhouse Prowlers, kicked off the evening, entertaining a vibrant crowd of tie-dyed fans and setting the perfect tone for the night.
Last weekend, Billy Strings delivered two sold-out concerts at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky. The weekend was a full-fledged celebration of bluegrass music in the state where it all began decades ago with Bill Monroe.
Never missing the chance to educate the audience on the bluegrass legends that came before him, Strings filled the setlist on Friday night with several traditional bluegrass tunes and covers, many of which referenced the state of Kentucky.
Billy Strings performed in Wilkes Barre, PA, on Friday night in the penultimate show of his 2023 Fall Tour. The tour, which began in Buena Vista, CO, at the end of September, covered the West Coast and Midwest, barnstormed through Europe in November, and concluded with several East Coast dates in December.
Mid-May, Billy Strings and his incredible gentlemen of the acoustic tale closed out their three-night Colorado run with a bang. Leading with an end-of-days meteorological event at night one of Red Rocks Amphitheatre that would have had most performers and fanbases ducking for cover and postponing their best laid plans, the band and the devoted dug in and drank deep under the deluge of precipitation and sound.
In February, Free Dirt Records announced new supergroup Mighty Poplar and sent shock waves of excitement throughout the acoustic world. Composed from the camps of Watchhouse, Leftover Salmon, The Punch Brothers, and Billy Strings, the bluegrass community got the goosebumps not only from the proclamation of a new album full of ear candy, but also a subsequent tour.
On February 3rd, Billy Strings completed the second of three nights at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. Capping out at 6,500, this venue with great sight lines, private suites, and a whole lotta comfort was packed wall to wall without feeling crowded, filled to the brim with the smiling faces and hearts that travel near and far to catch Billy and Company.
Following a great night of Phil and Friends at The Mission Ballroom Saturday night, the icing on the cake would be the afterparty taking place down the road at the exclusive social club Knew Conscious. Billed as Electric Dead Grass, this collaboration promised to bring together the powerhouse talent of the inexplicable force that is Ross James, banjo fury Andy Thorn, thundering cheshire Mark Levy, and Octo-handed deity channeler Garrett Sayers for a performance that blended exactly what the name intended.
