Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

Each year, Sixthman allows artists to propose their dream collaboration sets to take place on the ship. Last week, on board Cayamo: A Journey Through Song, the Stardust Theater came alive with the sounds of Dirt Does Dylan, a Bob Dylan tribute set hosted by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, that featured David Bromberg, Jeff Tweedy, Larry Campbell, Teresa Williams, Amy Helm, and other special guests.

Last time I photographed the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was in 1985 when Arlo Guthrie joined them on stage in Bangor Maine. Fast forward 37 years and the band, still lead by Jeff Hanna, sound as great as ever.

On Saturday, September 17th, Grammy Award-winners and Americana mainstays Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will make their grand return to Nashville’s beloved Ryman Auditorium for a special, one-night-only performance.

It’s been a few years since Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Jeff Hanna paid $4 to see Bob Dylan play at his high school auditorium in Long Beach, California, but the fire lit inside of Hanna that night still burns as strong as ever. Hanna and his Dirt Band bandmates have had quite a career of their own since then, introducing folk, bluegrass, and country music—what would later be termed “Americana”—to a whole new generation of fans.

Five-decades-running Americana pioneers Nitty Gritty Dirt Band have already played a major role in the preservation and popularity of folk music—their Will The Circle Be Unbroken album series introduced droves of new fans to folk, country, and bluegrass and earned the band multiple Grammy awards—but now, the long-running group have taken on another American institution near and dear to their hearts; the Bob Dylan songbook.

Multi-instrumentalist JOHN McEUEN is back with a new recording of the Americana classic, “HEY JOE,” featuring the OAK RIDGE BOYS.

In the fifty-seven years since Bob Dylan released his career-altering folksong, "The Times They Are A-Changin'," the times he sang of did seem to change. But now, in another period of national unrest, a President refusing to concede defeat or peacefully transfer power, and a renewed fire for justice in the long-fought battle for civil rights, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's new version of Dylan's classic sounds more poignant and insistent than ever before.
