Jakob Nowell, known for his role as a member of the newly reunited Sublime and his solo project Jakob’s Castle, has launched a new independent label, SVN/BVRNT, in collaboration with Jakobs Castle guitarist Zane Vandevort.
After an impressive past few years that saw Nowell sign with Epitaph Records and release his debut album 'Enter The Castle' under his solo moniker Jakob’s Castle, he took on the role of frontman for Sublime, stepping into the legacy left by his father, Bradley Nowell. Under his leadership, Sublime released their first new music in 28 years with the single "Feel Like That," which earned them a top-10 hit on Billboard's Alternative Airplay.
Now, Jakob Nowell continues to shape his own musical path by founding SVN/BVRNT, a label inspired by his and Vandevort’s Southern California roots and the spirit of iconic underground SoCal brands like Skunk Records and SRH Clothing. SVN/BVRNT embraces the DIY ethos of the ’90s and early 2000s, blending nostalgia with a fresh take on California’s cultural soundscape.
SVN/BVRNT is not just a label but a creative community—a collective of artists, misfits, and visionaries united by a love of music, art, and fashion. Distribution will be handled through Regime Music Group/Symphonic.
"People often say ‘music was better back then’ or ‘I listen to everything,’ I think those people would be happy to know that music is still great today, and it blends more genres than there are grains of sand on the beach," Nowell shared. “SVN/BVRNT is something that we have started to bring authentic music to the people who can really appreciate it. Just like my father Bradley Nowell, and my mentor Kevin Zinger used to do not so long ago, we see an emerging scene that is both nostalgic and excitingly refreshing. I believe music is more than just sound, it’s the story of people who listen."
Zane Vandevort added, “Starting SVN/BVRNT with Jakob felt like the natural next step. Since 2019, I’ve been organizing DIY shows across SoCal, influenced by my mentor, Kevin Zinger. Hearing what he was able to do in the 90s inspired me, and we aim to bring back that punk rock authenticity to a new generation of music lovers. I just really wanna bring back a sense of community and excitement. Jake and I are super stoked to see what the future holds."
One of the label’s first signings include Strange Case, the Ventura-based rock band co-founded by Vandevort and Mikey Netka. Known for their unique twist on the California sound, Strange Case has been making waves with their single "27 Club," which debuted on the legendary Los Angeles station 106.7 KROQ and has surpassed a million streams on Spotify.
