James 'Biscuit' Rouse, the dynamic drummer, vocalist, and producer, is set to make his mark with the debut release of Biscuit & Buddy, a tribute album dedicated to the legendary Buddy Miles. Slated for worldwide release on September 27, 2024, via German funk/jazz label Leopard Records, Biscuit & Buddy reimagines Buddy’s iconic songs through Rouse’s fresh and innovative style.
Rouse is no stranger to the spotlight, having performed with musical powerhouses such as Ms. Lauryn Hill, Sylena Johnson, and Vivian Green, and currently playing with Gerald Veasley, Screaming Headless Torsos, and Vernon Reid’s Band of Gypsys Revisited. Recently, Rouse toured with Living Colour and continues to thrive as a member of the Jerry Wonder and Arden Altino production team, contributing to projects like The Other Side of Newark and the BET Film "Miracle Before Christmas."
Driven by his deep admiration for Buddy Miles, Rouse brings new life to Buddy’s classics like "Life is What You Make It" and "Down by the River." In addition to honoring Buddy’s legacy, Rouse contributes original works to the album, including standout tracks like "GI Gina," "Shine," and "Enough Is Enough."
"Buddy Miles has always been my inspiration as a musician," says Rouse. "He’s the blueprint for who I am as a drummer and musical director. This project is a tribute to his spirit, breaking boundaries while staying true to the soul-funk roots Buddy created."
The release comes at a pivotal time, with Buddy Miles posthumously receiving overdue recognition. Miles is being inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 6, 2024, where Rouse will accept the award on behalf of the Miles family.
The album features an all-star lineup, including Vernon Reid (guitar), Doug Wimbish (bass), Marcus Machado (guitar), Charisa “The Violin Diva” Rouse (strings), and many more, with James ‘Biscuit’ Rouse at the helm on drums and vocals. The second single, "GI Gina," dives deep into themes of tumultuous relationships and the resilience required to push through for a healthier future, while "Them Changes," Buddy’s most famous track, captures heartbreak, hope, and the enduring power of love.
Celebrating Rouse’s multifaceted talents, Biscuit & Buddy is more than a tribute album—it’s a deeply personal homage to a musical legend whose impact still resonates today. With its genre-busting flair, the album delivers timeless soul-funk classics while highlighting Rouse’s originality as a songwriter and arranger.
In support of the release, Rouse has scheduled a series of live performances, including an album release event on September 27, 2024, in Philadelphia, and a special show at Platinum Sound Studios in New York City on September 23, 2024.
