Acclaimed singer/songwriter Pony Bradshaw releases “Kindly Turn the Bed Down, Drusilla” and “Notes on a River Town” from his upcoming album North Georgia Rounder, out on January 27th, 2023 (Soundly Music). North Georgia Rounder is a musical travelogue of Appalachia and an impressionistic journey of introspection and connection all at once. Pre-save North Georgia Rounder HERE.
“Kindly Turn the Bed Down, Drusilla” could be called a tongue-in-cheek road-song, almost a love letter to the one who stays home. The lyrics are colored with a bit of local vernacular as Bradshaw sings, “I left the heavens for them country taverns / Playing this ol’ devil’s box.” Bradshaw adds, “A good metaphor in song establishes an immediate connection with the listener which can be understood without explanation. It requires no complex interpretation.” The dark power of “Notes on a River Town” evokes the magical realism of some of Bradshaw’s favorite authors. “It’s sort of a Conradian backwoods dirge about lust,” Bradshaw says. Anguish seeps through the somber notes, leading listeners into the character’s atavistic desires. Listen via DSPs starting November 18th HERE.
These songs follow the October release of tracks “North Georgia Rounder” and “Mosquitoes” about which Brooklyn Vegan raved, “"Both are somber, tender, and genuinely gorgeous." Other tracks from the album, “Foxfire Wine” and “Safe in the Arms of Vernacular,” have been embraced by the DSPs and featured on various playlists.
Bradshaw recently announced a 2023 headline run, beginning with a release day show on January 27 in Nashville, TN at The Basement. Dates are below and at ponybradshaw.net.
North Georgia Rounder follows Bradshaw’s 2021 praised release Calico Jim and finds the thoughtful singer/songwriter at a unique moment on his journey. “The poet soon stops experimenting and innovating and starts his life’s work,” Bradshaw says about his intentions making the new album, citing a quote from the poet Wendell Berry. And for Bradshaw, that life’s work is a culmination of “sweat and work and joy and pain and anger and patience and restraint.”
