Ron Carter Quartet at Northampton MA Jazz Fest Oct.1!

Come to New England at the most gorgeous time of year for the most celebrated jazz bassist in history! The Ron Carter Quartet headlines the 11th Annual Northampton Jazz Festival at the Academy of Music, Saturday, Oct. 1, 7:30 PM with Renee Rosnes on piano, Jimmy Greene on saxophone, and Payton Crossley on drums.

Ron Carter is among the most original, prolific, and influential bassists in jazz. He has recorded over 2,200 albums, and has a Guinness world record to prove it! Over his 60 year career, he has recorded with so many of the jazz greats: Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, Dexter Gordon, Wes Montgomery, Bobby Timmons, Eric Dolphy, Cannonball Adderley and Jaki Byard to name a few. From 1963 to 1968, he was a member of the acclaimed Miles Davis Quintet. After leaving the quintet he embarked on a prolific 50-year freelance career that spanned vastly different music genres and continues to this day. He recorded with Aretha Franklin, appeared on the seminal hip-hop album Low End Theory with a Tribe Called Quest, wrote and recorded pieces for string quartets and Bach chorales for two to eight basses and accompanied Danny Simmons on a spoken word album.

Carter spends at least half the year on worldwide tours with his various groups. The Ron Carter Trio, The Ron Carter Quartet, the Ron Carter Nonet and Ron Carter’s Great Big Band. He has authored numerous books, including his autobiography, “Finding the Right Notes,” scored and arranged music for many films, appeared in countless jazz documentaries including Ken Burns “Jazz,” “Birth of the Cool” about Miles Davis and “It Must be Schwing,” the story of Blue Note records. He has received six honorary doctorates, won multiple Grammy awards, and awards from institutions around the globe for his indelible contributions to jazz and education.

Renee Rosnes, Piano

Pianist Renee Rosnes is one of the premier jazz pianists and composers of her generation. Upon moving to New York City from Vancouver, Canada, she quickly established a reputation of high regard, touring and recording with such masters as Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, J.J. Johnson, James Moody, and legendary bassist Ron Carter. She was a charter member of the all-star ensemble, the SFJAZZ Collective, with whom she toured for six years. Rosnes has released 17 recordings, appeared on many others as a sideman, won five Juno Awards, and is also the Musical Director of ARTEMIS.

Payton Crossley, Drums

Drummer Payton Crossley began gigging at the age of twelve and at twenty became a member of the legendary Ahmad Jamal Trio. He has performed with such notables as Nina Simone, Stan Getz, Hank Jones and Ron Carter. He has been a member of Ron Carter’s bands since the late 1990s.

Jimmy Greene, Saxophone

Saxophonist and educator Jimmy Greene has recorded numerous albums as a leader, including Grammy-nominated Beautiful Life (Mack Avenue, 2014), and over 75 albums as a sideman. Greene has toured and/or recorded with Horace Silver, Ron Carter, Tom Harrell, Freddie Hubbard, Harry Connick, Jr., Avishai Cohen, Kenny Barron, Lewis Nash, Dee Dee Bridgewater, the New Jazz Composers Octet and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, among many others. In addition to the many awards he has won for his artistry and compositions (including the prestigious Benny Golson Jazz Master Award at Howard University), he is Associate Professor of Music and Co-Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT.
