On the occasion of Jerry Garcia's birthday, renowned musician David Grisman reflects on his late friend and musical collaborator. Grisman recalls Garcia as a uniquely talented musician, artist, and human being with a kind soul— and a great friend. Their friendship began 60 years ago at a Bill Monroe show at Sunset Park in West Grove, PA, where both traveled—Garcia, notably, from much farther—to see the Father of Bluegrass music. This meeting marked the start of a deep personal and musical relationship.

GW: How did you come up with the idea?

The Grateful Dead's 1978 Spring Tour was more than just a peak of its post-hiatus period; it forever redefined the band's concert experience by establishing "Drums" and "Space" as regular live segments. An upcoming boxed set includes eight shows from the start of that historic tour, capturing the early days of these second-set traditions.

Inspired by the many incredible outdoor shows at Marin County’s legendary Terrapin Crossroads, Sunday Daydream Vol. 4 will feature a headlining set by Phil Lesh & Friends (with Taylor Goldsmith, Stu Allen, Holly Bowling, Griffin Goldsmith, Natalie Cressman, and Grahame Lesh). Jerry Day, the annual celebration honoring the life and legacy of Jerry Garcia, returns for its 22nd year on August 3rd, 2024. This year marks what would have been Jerry Garcia's 82nd birthday, and the festivities will take place at the iconic Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in McLaren Park.
