Big Words sounds like a funk band in a fever dream. Bassist Josh Myers is known for straddling the borders of jazz, rock and soul, particularly by supplying his steady low-end to Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds. Branching out from that in his own endeavor, he applies his harmonic compositions and sonic wanderlust to this instrumental band where the musical possibilities are endless.

I’m searching for phrases to describe Phases of the Moon Music & Art Festival.  It began as a dark side of the moon, but that was just a phase.  As an audience, our hackles were already up, howling at the moon before the weekend ever arrived.  Through no fault of the Phases organizers, RatDog had to cancel their appearance.  Bobby Weir’s lightening is lazy.

The band is led by Arleigh Kincheloe (Sister Sparrow), whose astoundingly powerful voice and sly demeanor make for a spellbinding presence onstage. She is backed by the mighty force of The Dirty Birds, a flock of seven men who masterfully lay down thundering grooves and soaring melodies.

Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds have come a long way since 2008, as exemplified in their latest set of songs on their newly released EP FIGHT.

Fusing the musical backgrounds and influences of nine different musicians into one unit, the Dirty Birds are a powerhouse of soul, funk, rock and a little bit of country.
