On Tour

I began my commercial broadcast radio career starting back in the early 90s, in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Working for that region’s heritage rock station was quite an introduction to the civilian world, as I had only recently finished my enlistment in the U.S. Navy. I came from uniforms, and tradition, to working with a morning show that wasn’t all that different from early Howard Stern.

Richmond, Virginia is one of those southern cities where one can ‘feel’ the history.. It’s everywhere you look.. There is Monument Avenue, with statues of the heroes -- from a Civil War that is still described by some old timers, as ‘the recent unpleasantness.’ There is the statue to the great African-American tap-dancer and performer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson.

When we last saw singer/songwriter Zack Borer, he was unsigned and itching to get his bandmates in the studio. 6 months later, Zack's had a song featured on the Google's Nexus One smartphone, been even been featured in a compilation video of 101 Bad Romance covers.

When small coffee house performances come to memory, a picture develops within the mind’s a eye that often seems to call up images of a simple set with acoustic guitar, wooden bar stools, a soft pool of light, and the gentle murmuring of an audience.

This is the quote that DJ Simon Posford (Shpongle) asked the crowd as he prepared to blow the minds of the audience. We definitely got Shpongled.

Mark Knopfler proved he was not too old to rock n' roll, as many old-school Dire Straits fans gathered at the Paramount to catch the former lead guitarist and vocalist of one of the most important bands of the 1980s.

The Avett Brothers played a pair of sold out shows at the Boulder Theater this week, and they brought fellow North Carolina country rockers Truth and Salvage Co. with them.  The Tuesday show,

Martin Sexton will be playing with the Ryan Montbleau band, his band, for a string of dates beginning today, 4/15/10 until Bonnaroo Music Festival June 10th down in Manchester, TN.  After Bonnaroo, he’ll be joining forces with the Dave Matthews Band until he winds down his tour at the end of summer.  What can you expect at a Martin Sexton show?  I got a chance to chat with him and find out…

"Boulder, CO, Fox Theatre. Giant Panda at 9. JBB at 10. TK at 11:30. Bring your dancing attire, dr." Not the most clear posting on Twitter, perhaps, but for fans of Toubab Krewe--the "TK" in the tweet--the message was rather plain. Thursday's show was going to be one with jams so moving, you had better come ready to dance. And they were right.
