BFD/The Orchard is proud to announce the release of Judy Garland’s Judy At The Palace: Closing Night 1952. This album immortalizes Judy’s first appearance on the legendary NYC stage with a string of performances that made Broadway history by bringing Vaudeville back to the venue and establishing Garland as the uniquely talented stage performer she was.

By the end of the Palace run, seeing “Judy Garland in concert” had been cemented as a bona fide event. She offered unforgettable performances to her audiences in a format that reintroduced Vaudeville to the Great White Way.

After the standard Vaudeville kickoff, Garland’s truly classic setlist included:

  • “Call the Papers”
  • “On The Town”
  • “Judy At The Palace Medley”
  • “Rock-A-Bye Your Baby”
  • “Love Is Sweeping The Country”
  • “Judy’s Olio” (“You Made Me Love You” / “For Me And My Gal” / “The Boy Next Door” / “The Trolley Song”)
  • “Get Happy”
  • “A Couple of Swells”
  • “Over the Rainbow”

The album is available via BFD/The Orchard on digital, CD, and vinyl.

The original four-week run was extended to a record-breaking nineteen weeks due to incredible demand for tickets and the show’s unprecedented success. Judy took a few days off in mid-November (the 11th through the 16th) due to the strain of performing thirteen shows a week (!). After returning on November 16, she then took five days off in mid-December for the holidays.

For her achievement, Judy received a special Tony Award on March 30, 1952.

Christmas

Judy Garland never recorded a dedicated Christmas album, but her holiday performances on film, radio, and television remain timeless treasures. This album is derived from The Judy Garland Show Episode #15, also known as “The Christmas Show,” taped on December 6, 1963, and aired on December 22, 1963. It is said to be Judy’s favorite episode from her CBS musical variety show, and it’s easy to see why—her children, Liza Minnelli and Lorna and Joey Luft, join her as special guests.

Several songs from Broadway shows, including “Steam Heat” (Consider Yourself), “Where Is Love?” (Oliver!), and “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?” (My Fair Lady), are featured alongside traditional Christmas favorites. Guest Jack Jones sings the beautiful ballad “Lollipops And Roses.” Judy delivers a magical, emotionally charged performance of “Little Drops Of Rain,” a song from the animated film Gay Purr-ee, for which she provided the voice of the cat Mewsette.

Judy opens with “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” from her classic 1944 film Meet Me In St. Louis and closes with another signature song, “Over The Rainbow.”

This is a classic Christmas album that generates genuine warmth decades later. Judy’s fans will undoubtedly consider it one of her most cherished holiday treasures. The album is available via BFD/The Orchard on digital and CD.
