Los Angeles-based progressive rock duo Days Between Stations (DBS) unveils their highly anticipated fourth album, Perpetual Motion Machines (Music for a Film), on November 29, 2024, available digitally, on CD, and vinyl. The release coincides with the premiere of the band’s latest music video, “Being,” featuring acclaimed vocalist Durga McBroom, on YouTube.

About the Album

Perpetual Motion Machines originated as a musical score for a documentary on celebrated artist Jean-Paul Bourdier. DBS founding members Oscar Fuentes Bills (keyboards) and Sepand Samzadeh (guitar) transformed their cinematic compositions into a fully realized album. “Jean-Paul’s artwork was our muse,” Sepand reflects. “We scored the music to his pictures and existing films, allowing his poetic philosophy to guide us.”

The album’s nine tracks offer a captivating journey blending cinematic soundscapes, progressive rock elements, and profound storytelling, with standouts like “Seeds” and the epic centerpiece “Being.” The album is dedicated to the late ‘Big’ Bill Kaylor, who contributed to its early sessions and the band’s critically acclaimed In Extremis.

Music Videos: A Visual Experience

The album features two music videos:

  • “Being” (Premiering November 29): This introspective performance video showcases Durga McBroom’s ethereal vocals, weaving themes of existence and personal reflection inspired by Bourdier’s art.
  • “Seeds” (Released September 2024): Featuring Jean-Paul Bourdier’s creative process, the video was lauded by Prog Magazine, winning “Track of the Week” upon its release.

Production and Legacy

Produced by Navon Weisberg (The Voice, Puddle of Mudd), Perpetual Motion Machines captures the raw emotional energy of DBS’s creative vision. Weisberg’s approach allowed Sepand and Oscar to focus on their artistry, while his technical expertise elevated the final product.

A Journey Through Time  Production and Legacy

Formed in 2003, Days Between Stations derived their name from Steve Erickson’s novel and have consistently pushed the boundaries of progressive rock. Notable achievements include their debut self-titled album (2007), In Extremis (2012, produced by Yes’s Billy Sherwood), and Giants (2020), which featured Durga McBroom on “Witness the End of the World.”

The band’s connection to film extends back to their debut track, “Radio Song,” featured in Young, Single & Angry (2006). Their music has since appeared in Paul & Trisha: The Art of Fluidity (2023) and other independent films, cementing their reputation as cinematic storytellers.
