Creating "How to Dream in Color" has been both a tribute and a transformation for Lotus. Following the tragic passing of longtime percussionist Chuck Morris, the band adapted their recording process to honor his memory while embracing new creative directions. The band gravitated toward a layered drum sound to maintain the rhythmic complexity that Morris contributed to their music.
The album’s singles, "Watching the Distant Storm" and "How Do I Come Down," have already garnered significant attention. "Watching the Distant Storm" has surpassed 30,000 streams on Spotify, while "How Do I Come Down" has achieved over 56,000 streams. Both tracks have been featured on Spotify's "Modern Jam Band" editorial playlist and Apple Music's "New In Rock" playlist.
Goldmine Magazine praises the album, stating it "lives within a vast sonic universe," while Relix Magazine hails it as "another sonic revolution, steering into new electronic textures for an elaborate and enthralling sound."
"How to Dream in Color" spans twelve tracks, blending instrumental prowess with selective vocal integrations from longtime collaborator Gabe Otto. Unlike previous albums where the band recorded live in the studio, this project involved building tracks in layers, creating a collage-based approach that allowed for intricate and diverse soundscapes.
The title of the album was inspired by the dream-like quality of the music, evoking a sense of limitless possibilities. This theme of boundless creativity is evident throughout the album, inviting listeners to explore the vibrant and infinite realms of Lotus' musical vision.

Leading album single "How Do I Come Down" stands out as a rock-driven track, highlighted by Tim Palmieri's scorching guitar parts. This track captures the energetic and improvisational spirit of Lotus' live performances, blending rock elements seamlessly with their signature electronic sound. Describing the creation of “How Do I Come Down,” Luke Miller (guitar, keys) shares, “This track is a manifesto for the entire album – a dream scenario where anything is possible yet flows like water.” Bassist Jesse Miller adds, “The tonality moves between major and minor keys, akin to driving through a mountain highway, transitioning between light, dark, and the exhilarating unknown.”
Gabe Otto's vocal contributions to "How Do I Come Down" were integral to the track's completion, adding a complementary layer that enhances the song's dynamic feel. Otto's voice, well-suited to the band's vibe, adds depth and cohesion to the music.
"Watching the Distant Storm," the second single from "How to Dream in Color," captures the essence of Lotus' signature sound while pushing the boundaries of their musical exploration. This track melds lush synth textures with intricate guitar melodies, creating a soundscape that is both expansive and intimate. The song's dynamic progression evokes a sense of journey and anticipation, perfectly encapsulating the album's dream-like theme. With its driving rhythms and evocative harmonies, "Watching the Distant Storm" has quickly resonated with fans and new listeners alike.
In conjunction with the album release, Lotus will perform a special album release show tonight at Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia, where fans can experience the album in its entirety in an intimate setting. Ticket buyers will have the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of the album.
The album's visuals also reflect the band's innovative spirit. Accompanying “Watching the Distant Storm” is a jaw-dropping music video, edited by Lotus bassist Jesse Miller. The psychedelic video features live concert footage from acclaimed director MK Devo, combined with swirling, kaleidoscopic visuals.
