This week, EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler downplayed the threat of climate chaos on national TV. Meanwhile, communities across the country are feeling the devastating impacts of a warming Earth -- from flooding in the Midwest, to wildfires in the Southwest, to hurricanes in the East.
To combat Wheeler and the GOP’s climate denial, we need Congress to pass a Green New Deal that includes a just transition away from fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas.
This idea is gaining momentum. But Congress won’t act unless we keep the pressure on. That’s why Friends of the Earth staff and volunteers are coming together next week to talk about our plan to pass a strong Green New Deal, advance investigations into the Trump administration and hold our elected officials accountable to taking action on climate. Your advocacy for a strong Green New Deal has already made an impact. Our movement sparked a national conversation in the news and in the halls of Congress.
What’s more, your activism has drawn attention not only to the threat of climate chaos, but to the bad actors responsible for the crisis -- the fossil fuel industry executives reaping massive profits while the world burns, and their friends in the Trump administration.
Now it’s time to go even further -- by taking action at Congressional district offices when your Representative is home for recess next month. We have to remind Representatives across the country that we need a Green New Deal now -- one that phases out fossil fuels and transitions the economy to 100 percent renewable energy, decarbonizes transportation and expands access to affordable public transit, transitions away from energy-intensive, polluting, inequitable industrial agriculture and builds a healthy, just food system where organic is for all, ensures a fair and just transition led by impacted workers and communities, includes a national jobs guarantee, and upholds Indigenous rights.

Andrew Wheeler still runs the EPA. Trump is still in the White House. The GOP is still in control of the Senate. And they are still doing everything they can to defend their billionaire, Big Oil friends and silence the voices all who protest.
But we can’t give in, because our planet can’t wait. There is no doubt that climate change is real and it is happening now. Average global temperatures are increasing. Glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising -- and so are we.
The solutions we need are in sight -- renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and millions of jobs that put communities on the front lines of environmental destruction first in the fight to stop it. But we have to keep fighting for a real plan to achieve them.
