The Fox Theatre - Boulder

There were four standards for the bands on the bill at The Fox Theater in Boulder on Monday night: each band must have at least one member with an afro (or big hair, at least), each band must hail from somewhere on the western seaboard, each band must maintain a packed house and each band must rip shit up during their set.

Although Orgone has not quite reached the mainstream or even become a household name in the jamband or funk scene, it will not be long until these scenarios happen for the powerful band from California. That is why I looked forward to this show since I first saw them on a tiny stage at last year’s Bonnaroo.

It was over a decade ago, when I was barely of legal age to gain entry into a bar, that I used to frequent a small, smoky bar in my native Long Island, NY, and used to catch the house band that played every Monday night. The house band was a blues, funk, and roots-rock outfit that played a wide array of music, and was known for the stellar musical prowess of its members. Anchoring this band was lead guitar player and singer / songwriter Andy Falco, whose slick bluesy electric guitar solos were an oft anticipated segment of each song.

Jeff Austin is a shoo-in for the Most Animated Mandolin Player of the year award. There’s no doubt he’d win, if and when such an award came to be.
