The Meters
The Dead Funk Summit is a culmination of everything Joe Marcinek has done with the Joe Marcinek Band. It started with a concept of a different lineup every weekend using players from all over the country. This led to meeting and playing with prominent members of the Grateful Dead world and the New Orleans Funk scene. It sparked a dream Joe had of bringing together George Porter Jr and Melvin Seals. This historic summit of the two worlds will be the first time the two have shared the stage!
About Melvin Seals:
If James Brown is the Godfather of Soul, The Meters are without a doubt the Forefathers of Funk.
In a recent conversation we had, guitarist Leo Nocentelli laid down why music from New Orleans was so distinct.
“There are only a few cities that have a reputation of having a sound… [New Orleans] is a unique city that has its own identity. When a New Orleans record hits the radio, you know where it’s from. Being identified as an individual rather than sounding like anybody.”
Founding Meters funk guitarist Leo Nocentelli is set to premier his exciting new incarnation of The Meters Experience. Founding Parliament Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell will join Nocentelli for two nights of funk classics at the Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California.
So many legendary touring acts continue to play and perform on the fortune of their loyal fans coming to see their shows. Stalwarts of the scene know that getting on the road and playing as often as possible is the lifeblood of continuity. Year after year, summer after summer, fans travel to see Phish, Widespread Panic, whatever incarnation of the Dead, and on and on. It’s refreshing when great lesser-worshiped acts get their chance to build a fan base, especially with the support of old mainstay bands.
