Zion I
Indubious, the unique Oregon-based reggae trio who topped the Billboard Reggae Chart with their last full-length in 2019, returns with the launch of a pre-order for their new album, The Bridge, and a new single featuring the legendary Capleton. The Bridge – the band’s first record for tastemaker label Easy Star Records – comes out April 9, and features an all-star cast of collaborators. “The Throne” was just released and follows the initial single, “Neva Bow,” featuring Zion I, which came out last November.
On the heels of his newest LP Shadowboxing, the west coast hip hop entity known as Zion I came to the Fox Theater with Los Rakas, Locksmith, Kev Choice, and J. Lately to spread the word of the Rapture World Tour.
The venue’s Velvet Jones, a small-to-medium set in downtown Santa Barbara with Zion-I headlining—my first California show. Born and bred in New England, I had zero idea what I should be expecting from the Friday night gig out here on the western coast.
This time ‘round for Zion-I, the duo’s MC Zumbi has a mission statement. In brief—“The sole purpose of the MC is to energize, invigorate, and guide the listener to a higher state of mind, whether that be reflection, relaxation or enlightenment.”Production behind the MC here as he goes to work on the task at hand is classic West Coast with Eastern underground dubs n’ breaks sprinkled in—think Wu-Tang meets Def Jux featuring the righteous sermons of a bizarro, born-again Mad Child preachin’ redemption.
