Asbury Park, NJ funk outfit Waiting On Mongo kicked off 2023 with undeniable momentum and their eyes set on a bright future. The septet, composed of some of the Jersey Shore’s premier musicians, delivers an enthralling live experience, complete with deep pocket drums, soaring horns, and scorching guitar work. Funk Portal Live, Mongo’s fresh five-track release, is a snapshot of the band at their best, igniting legendary hometown venue The Stone Pony in May 2022. Feeding off of the energy of the capacity crowd, Funk Portal Live can be described as raw auditory energy; a fitting soundtrack for a stroll down Bourbon Street. The project is a live companion piece to the band’s 2022 studio release, Funk Portal, Pt. One, showcasing their uncanny ability to extend their catchy compositions in an improvisational setting.
“This show was a big one for the band. The record came after the pandemic and a lineup change, so we really wanted people to hear this new sound,” said Mike Susino (guitar). “After sitting on the live tracks for months, we decided that this would be the perfect time to give people a glimpse into our live show experience.”
2023 has already seen the band appear on several notable stages, including Burlington, VT’s Nectar’s, Red Bank, NJ’s The Vogel, and Train’s Sail Across The Sun Cruise. Waiting on Mongo will celebrate the release of Funk Portal Live on Saturday, April 15th at NYC’s Hill Country BBQ alongside NJ natives Marsoupial. Later this summer, they will take the stage for their inaugural appearance at Sea Hear Now in Asbury Park.
