Indie/jam quintet Goose spent this week in the southeast, delivering a string of sold-out performances to crowds in North Carolina and Georgia. Currently in the midst of Summer Tour 2024, the band is firing on all cylinders, providing their signature improvisational fireworks and technical wizardry, night after night.

Red Hat Amphitheater - Raleigh, NC - June 18

Goose kicked off this week’s run with a sold out Tuesday night show in Raleigh. Set one opened with “The Whales,” followed by a fluid, five-song segue “Atlas Dogs > Rockdale > Weird Fishes > Indian River > Flowdown.” The “Atlas Dogs” jam was particularly compelling, with guitarist/vocalist Rick Mitarotonda weaving in Tarantella Napoletana teases into his spectacular melodic lines. “Weird Fishes,” a complex cover of a Radiohead classic appeared after an 81-show gap, and effortlessly bled into a buoyant “Indian River,” which featured “Welcome to Delta,” “Turn on Your Love Light,” and “Bubblehouse” teases.

Set two began with a high-energy rendition of “Animal,” subsequently launching into a massive “Pancakes,” which was easily the highlight of the evening. The 25-minute cut traversed multiple distinct jam sections, transitioning from a dark, experimental motif to a blissful conclusion. “Into the Myst” followed, and the band then launched into a cheeky cover of Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride,” eliciting a venue-wide singalong. After “This Old Sea,” Goose closed set two with fan-favorite “Hot Tea.” Following a brief break, the band returned to the stage to encore with Rupert Holmes’ “Escape (The Piña Colada Song).

Fox Theatre - Atlanta, GA - June 20

Goose was met with yet another sold-out crowd, welcoming them to Atlanta for their inaugural run at the historic Fox Theatre. “Butterfiles,” a smooth song penned by Peter Anspach (keys, vocals, guitar). Bluesy cut “California Magic” followed, before a slow, melodic take on catalog classic “All I Need.” Anspach, Mitarotonda, and bassist Trevor Weekz traded melodic ideas throughout the jam, before collectively segueing into a pair of Kenny Loggins classics, “I’m Alright,” and “Make The Move.” The band treated the audience to a rare “Jive I > Jive II > Jive Lee” to close set one. These three tunes, rarely performed consecutively live, are known throughout the fan base as the “Jive Suite,” or a “jivefecta.”

Set two began with instrumental composition “The Labyrinth,” before exploding into a venue-wide dance party to the song “So Ready.” A cover of Grateful Dead classic “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” reached uncharted territory, seeing the band dig into a fast-paced 25-minute improvisational voyage. After “The Old Man’s Boat,” Goose again picked up the energy with “The Empress of Organos” to close set two. The band encored with cannabis anthem “Doobie Song” to close out the first of three shows in Atlanta.

Fox Theatre - Atlanta, GA - June 21

The band’s second evening in Atlanta began with Echo & The Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon,” a selection from the soundtrack to 2001 sci-fi classic Donnie Darko. A dynamic take on “Elizabeth,” preceded “Dr. Darkness” before a spectacular cover of The Clash’s classic “Rock The Casbah,” with Jeff Arevalo (drums, percussion) on lead vocals. A turbo-charged “Drive” kept the energy high, ushering in anthemic rock song “Bob Don,” highlighted by a soaring solo from Mitarotonda. Set one closed with “Everything Must Go.”

Unforgettable musical moments marked the start of set two, with Goose launching into “Hungersite,” a familiar cut from the 2022 album Dripfield. Recently debuted song  “Give it Time” came next, preceding a transition into a scorching rendition of “Thatch.” Energetic, danceable “Feel it Now” kept spirits high, before the singalong ballad “726.” A hard-hitting “Dripfield,” powered by a precise, pulsating four on the floor beat from drummer Cotter Ellis, finished off set two. Friday night’s encore was “Turbulence & The Night Rays.”

Fox Theatre - Atlanta, GA - June 22

Goose’s third night in Atlanta certainly did not disappoint, and the band began the night with jazzy jam vehicle “Hot Love & The Lazy Poet.” A cover of The Wood Brothers’ “Atlas” made its triumphant return to the band’s live catalog after a 92 show gap, paving the way for “Mr. Action,” a sweet tune dedicated to the band’s hard working crew. “Arrow,” an avant-garde afrobeat influenced scorcher, was followed by “Silver Rising,” and a jaw-dropping “Same Old Shenanigans' ' closed set one.

Set two will be etched in the annals of Goose history as an instant classic. The jam-heavy, three song set is a snapshot of the band at their finest, weaving together incredible songwriting and musical mastery. Longtime fan-favorite “Tumble,” kicked the set into high gear, and the scorching jam did not relent. The band then segued into emotive song “A Western Sun,” before launching into “Red Bird.” “Red Bird” went the distance, and featured soaring solos, three unique jam sections, and wandered through several harmonic ideas and time signatures. The crowd remained laser focused throughout the set and erupted into a massive standing ovation at its conclusion. Goose returned to the stage for an encore, treating the crowd to The Band’s classic “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” followed by a huge “Factory Fiction” to close out the show.

Goose wraps up their southeast run with a performance at Charlotte, NC’s Skyla Credit Union Amphitheatre. The show is completely sold out, but a live stream is available via nugs.net. The band closes out this leg of summer tour with performances in Portland, ME (Thompson’s Point), Philadelphia, PA (Mann Center), New York, NY (Forest Hills Stadium), and New Haven, CT (Westville Music Bowl).
