Join us for an unforgettable evening of Grateful Dead-inspired music and community at Toot’s, featuring two incredible acts: Todd Bugbee’s Dead Roses and David Gans’ new project, "It Was Dead When I Got Here."

Dead Roses: A Bay Area Treasure

Hailing from the vibrant musical tapestry of the San Francisco Bay Area, Dead Roses is a powerhouse Grateful Dead tribute band that captures the essence and improvisational spirit of the legendary rock group. With a stellar lineup of seasoned musicians:

  • Stephanie Hartwell-Mandella – Vocals

  • Todd Bugbee – Guitar

  • Nate Beltz – Guitar

  • Tim Baker – Bass

  • James Miller – Keys

  • Preston Barnes – Drums

Dead Roses delivers a transcendent journey through the Dead’s extensive catalog. Stephanie’s soaring vocals—enhanced by her recent performances with Melvin Seals and JGB—captivate audiences, while the dual guitars of Todd Bugbee and Nate Beltz seamlessly channel the interplay of Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir. With Tim Baker’s groovy basslines, James Miller’s textured keyboard work, and Preston Barnes’ rhythmic precision, the band creates an authentic live experience that keeps the Grateful Dead’s spirit alive.

It Was Dead When I Got Here: David Gans' New Musical Adventure

Led by Grateful Dead historian, author, and musician David Gans, It Was Dead When I Got Here is an exciting collaboration born out of a shared love for improvisation and Dead music. This new project features:

  • David Gans – Guitar

  • Joe Rut – Guitar (of Joe Rut's Sunshine Shovelers, voted East Bay’s best band)

  • Joshua Raoul Brody – Keys

  • Dave Jess – Bass

  • Andrew Griffin – Drums/Vocals

“Joe called me and said he wanted to play some Dead music,” recalls Gans. “Then Joshua Raoul Brody expressed interest in conversational improv, and everything clicked into place. We’ve been delivering well-received performances and can’t wait to share our unique take on the Dead’s music with this amazing community.”
