This weekend, Vermont-based jam quartet Twiddle returned to the Northeast for a pair of shows. Dubbed the “Valentine’s Run 2020,” the band played at The Palace Theatre (Albany, NY) on Friday, and at the sold-out State Theatre (Portland, ME) on Saturday. Much to the delight of the droves of fervent supporters, both shows provided a deep-dive into Twiddle’s ever-expanding catalog, featuring selections from each stage of the group’s 15-year career.
Night one saw Twiddle take the stage with the letters “L-O-V-E” illuminated behind them. After opening with “Five,” from the 2015 release “Plump,” Twiddle traversed a segue-heavy first set, weaving together fan-favorite classics “Every Soul,” “Apples,” “Beehop,” and “When It Rains it Pours,” among others.
Set two opened with a heartfelt rendition of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get it On,” before the band transitioned into a set of originals, punctuated by an exploratory “Doinkinbonk>Just Gravy>Donkinbonk.” The well-received extended jams kept the band on stage long enough that they exceeded the venue’s curfew and were unable to play an encore.
Saturday’s show in Portland saw an enthusiastic sold-out crowd erupt for a “Nicodemus Portulay>Gatsby the Great>Zazu’s Flight” opener. Set one closed with a dynamic “Lost in the Cold” featuring a sit-in from local frend Josh Dobbs on keys. Highlights of a segue-heavy set two included a marathon presentation of “Jamflowman>Frankenfoot>Slippin in the Kitchen>Classical Gas,” before the band closed out the weekend with an encore of “Syncopated Healing” and “Juggernaut.”
Twiddle's 2020 winter tour continues this weekend with shows in Pittsburgh, PA (Roxian Theatre), Covington, KY (Madison Theater), and Chicago, IL (Park West).
