Dark Star Orchestra

DSO | Good Morning Little Schoolgirl | Boulder Theater | 2015

In the snowy bleak winters of Indianapolis, there are few things that will make you leave the house, but there is one shining light every year when you think you may never be warm again, Dark Star Orchestra’s winter tour always makes a stop in Indianapolis to warm us up. There is no better way to warm your body and your soul, then some sweet Grateful Dead tunes. No matter what the weather is like outside, Dark Star Orchestra will always bring a smile to my face.

Later this weekend, on Sun. Feb. 8, Dark Star Orchestra’s performance at The Pageant in St. Louis, MO will be offered via free live stream from Yahoo Screens. The stream starts at 9 PM EST (8 PM CST) this Sunday. Interested Deadheads can bookmark this page: https://bit.ly/1ynUZyy as the stream will launch from that online portal.

Yahoo Screen in collaboration with Live Nation are providing the global live stream for everyone to check out the performance at no charge.

Dark Star Orchestra and All Good Presents announce today the return of the Dark Star Jubilee Music Festival to Legend Valley in Thornville, OH, just 30 minutes east of Columbus, on Memorial Day Weekend May 22 - 24. Hosted and curated by Dark Star Orchestra, world-renowned re-creators of the Grateful Dead live experience, this fourth annual Jubilee festival features these artists:

We like to think of ourselves as intellectually superior beings. I am speaking of the jamband fan of course; but based on my observation, I am sure you already assumed that. We like to think of ourselves as intellectually superior, and we talk out of both sides of our mouth in doing so. We promote inner balance and are renowned for drug use. We promote originality, but foam at the mouth at a song played every 3rd show on summer tour for 30 years. We liken our musical preferences to art at its highest and we ignore anything that the masses have given the same validation.

As 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of the world’s introduction to the music of the Grateful Dead, Dark Star Orchestra announces today their fourth annual Dark Star Jubilee taking place this Spring. Held Memorial Day Weekend at Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio - the historic, sprawling venue where the Dead played six times – the multi-day festival brings the spirit of the Grateful Dead’s music to life with 25 bands performing over three days and nights.

On a cold fall evening, November 11, 1997, the founding lineup for the Dark Star Orchestra began its first of four weekly performances run at Chicago’s Martyrs’. Fast forward to 2014 where today the band has performed 2379 shows in that time, eclipsing the number of shows the Grateful Dead performed over its 30 year arc.

They’ll be fresh off DSO’s Fall Tour, but they can’t resist making music together, so Mattson/Barraco & Friends with Skip Vangelas is pleased to announce a holiday season 3-night run of stirring psychedelic electricity!

On August 1, 1973 The Band opened for Grateful Dead on Jerry Garcia’s 31st birthday, making for one of the most memorable nights in American rock & roll history. On Friday, August 1 of this year, forty-one years later, Dark Star Orchestra and The Band tribute act, The Weight will be recreating this entire show for “A Very Jerry Birthday Jam” at Heritage Amphitheater at Pocahontas State Park.

For the third year in a row I had the honor to attend one of my favorite events all year.  There is nothing else in this world that can put a smile on my face quite like a familiar Grateful Dead tune can. This year at Dark Star Jubilee was just as beautiful as the last three. I couldn’t have picked a better way to spend my Memorial Day weekend. As I walked through the gates, and to the top of the ridge of the pine trees, I remembered what it was like to feel at home.
