North Mississippi Allstars
Taking place across five venues in the “best small city in America” on September 13th and 14th, Park City Songwriter Festival promises to be an experience to captivate even the most avid of live music fans. In addition to the headliner’s concerts each night, songwriters in the round, panels, and workshops will all be part of the PCSF experience, which was dreamed up by Park City residents and festival co-founders, Ben Anderson, Scott Thomson, and Aaron Benward.
Tickets for the inaugural Beach Road Weekend on Martha’s Vineyard August 9-11, go on-sale Friday, May 31th at 10:00 AM. The three-day music and media festival at Veterans Memorial Park in Vineyard Haven will feature performances by Phil Lesh and Friends, Grace Potter, Dispatch, John Fogerty and much more. The festival kicks off with a special screening of Jaws, with accompaniment by the Cape Symphony.
Downtown New York City saw the return of an amazing yearly musical event this past weekend, The Tree of Life Benefit. Created by music lover and activist Robert S. Rosman and his family, Tree of Life gathers big names of the metro jam scene and beyond to deliver memorable nights of collaborative music in an intimate setting. It all raises funds for Ferncliff Manor, a school specializing in the care and treatment of individuals with disabilities.
Stony Plain Records announces a February 8 release date for Amour, a new CD teaming the roots music guitar talents of Colin Linden and Luther Dickinson. The CD was produced by Colin Linden, recorded at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, and features a backing band dubbed “The Tennessee Valentines:” Dominic Davis – bass; Bryan Owings – drums; Fats Kaplin – violin and accordion; and Kevin McKendree – keyboards.
The Rails' newest release Other People is out via Nashville's Thirty Tigers. Comprised of Kami Thompson (daughter of Linda and Richard Thompson) and James Walbourne (who has performed with the likes of the Pretenders and Ray Davies), The Rails' newest release is a record rooted in change: both musical and circumstantial. It would have been easy for The Rails to have picked up where they left off in the wake of their acclaimed 2014 album Fair Warning.
The second annual Arroyo Seco Music Festival took place on the third longest day of the year, Saturday, June 23rd, bringing in the summer concert season in grand style. The two-day festival was organized by Goldenvoice, the same organization responsible for the most auspicious festival in the country, Coachella. The Arroyo Seco festival was held in a beautiful tree-lined meadow, just outside the Rose Bowl, in the affluent suburbs of Pasadena.
Keith Richards’ blending of rhythm and lead guitars, the “ancient art of weaving,” is nothing new. In fact, it’s relatively common. It doesn’t take a trained ear to recognize, but one night with the southern guitars of The North Mississippi Allstars and Anders Osborne is enough of a case study in showing how to do it properly. Their combined recording effort under the moniker N.M.O. (North Mississippi Osborne), “Freedom and Dreams,” sparked an extensive trek across the states and included a night at The Ogden Theatre in Denver, Colorado.
At 18 I moved to the deep south for school. But not until I was tripping over the shoelaces of 20 did I realize that not everyone down there liked me.
