Grateful Dead

It's an understatement to say improvisational guitar icon Steve Kimock has been keeping busy. He’s approaching an East Coast tour with his newest band KIMOCK featuring his son John Morgan Kimock on drums and frequent collaborator Leslie Mendelson on guitar and vocals.  He just wrapped up a successful yet unprecedented mini-tour of Japan.

The Grateful Dead played more than 2,000 concerts, but maybe none continues to spark interest and provoke discussion quite like the band's performance at Cornell University's Barton Hall on May 8, 1977. It is one of the most collected, traded, and debated concerts by any band ever, has topped numerous fan polls through the years, and was a favorite of the group's longtime archivist Dick Latvala, who stated: Enough can't be said about this superb show.

The most celebrated Grateful Dead show in history is finally getting its official release! The forces aligned for the Dead on May 8, 1977, at Barton Hall, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; for what many hail the pinnacle performance of their 30-year career. So revered is the performance, that an audience recording of this show joined Prince’s Purple Rain and Dolly Parton’s Coat Of Many Colors as 2012’s inductees into the National Recording Registry of the U.S.

Head on out to your local record store this weekend to hear every note from CORNELL 5/8/77. Continuing the Grateful Dead concert experience in its 20th year, Dark Star Orchestra today announces special plans for The 40th Anniversary Shows as a celebration of the Dead’s infamous May 1977 tour.

In the cozy confines of the Crazy Horse Saloon in Nevada City, CA, on April 29, Shakey Zimmerman turned lots of heads with their powerful, compelling takes on venerable Bob Dylan and Neil Young material. Opening the show was the acoustic duo of Shakey’s Pat Nevins along with music newcomer Jennifer Mydland, daughter of Brent Mydland, The Grateful Dead’s longest-tenured keyboardist – and vocalist.

There's a common thread here, we promise! Deadheads across the good ol' U.S. of A. will be gathering next week to celebrate Cornell. Headed to JazzFest?

Thanks to the Boston Red Sox and all of you who came out to Rex and cheer the team at  The Grateful Dead Night at Fenway Park! Thanks also to the Red Sox for a nice additional donation!

I was at this show, and it still remains the favorite of the 70 shows I saw between 1973 -1995. Was only the second night of the tour, general admission, on a rainy cool day. Civic Center was way smaller than most of the other Northeastern 'hockey rink' venues, so it always felt more intimate and with better sound. I attended the show with at least 10 of my friends, we grabbed a bunch of seats just off the floor, not too far back on the side.

The four-hour Grateful Dead documentary “Long Strange Trip,” will be part of this year's Film on the Rocks. You can catch the movie on May 25th.  General admission tickets are $15 and go on sale April 21 via denverfilm.org.
