Just in time for Record Store Day on November 22nd, a truly under-sung live masterpiece is to be re-released. Many fans know of Jerry Garcia & Howard Wales 1970 memorizing fusion studio album Hooteroll?, which was notable (aside from the inspired flowing free-jazz) as Garcia’s first studio recording outside of the Grateful Dead since the band’s inception. Indeed Garcia saw something remarkable about Wales playing.

For the first time ever, Side Trips: Volume One, the celebrated live collaboration between Jerry Garcia and keyboardist Howard Wales will be reissued on vinyl and made available at streaming services on Record Store Day (November 24th). Side Trips: Volume One is the latest in a line of special reissues, live recordings, concerts and events planned throughout 2017 & 2018 in celebration of Jerry Garcia’s 75th birthday.

We're wrapping up this year's Dave's Picks series with one from the Grateful Dead's beloved Bay Area. An often overlooked gem from '72 (who's to blame with that rich pool of excellence), 8/25/72 Berkeley Community Theatre finds the Dead laid back and in the comfort zone of home. While one might think this would make the night too relaxed, the band fall in line with their "West Coast best" paradigm.

On October 13th, Round Records will release a special reissue of Jerry Garcia Band’s classic album Cats Under The Stars. In celebration of the 40th anniversary since the album’s recording, two vinyl configurations will be released - a limited edition pressing of 5,000 marbled gold 180gram vinyl with individually numbered foil-stamped packaging and a 180gram black vinyl.

A few thousand music-loving adventure-seekers on September 9 received quite the idyllic sun-splashed reward when they witnessed this year’s Sound Summit, headlined by Phil Lesh and some extra special “friends.” The eight-hour festival-like show, chock full of five performers plus an avant-garde dance ensemble, took place at a perch high above Marin County, California’s Mill Valley, at a hundred-year-old stone amphitheater near the top of the area’s famed Mt. Tamalpais.
